As I mentioned some time ago, Julian Roberts is coming to NYC; less than a month to go now! The details for the NYC event are below but Julian's tour will also cover Toronto, St. Helena CA and Vancouver. In NYC Julian is teaming up with JR Campbell from Kent State University, the host of the NY event. The tireless Sandy Ericson from the Center for Pattern Design is the powerhouse behind the tour and can provide more details. The current issue of Threads has an article on zero-waste fashion design and my work features in the article quite prominently so thank you Sandy as well as the team at Threads!

Introduction to the basics of subtraction cutting.

SATURDAY, JUNE 12 1:00PM-5:00PM
Workshop II: Advanced/Expert Level Sub-cutting and Applications of Digital Print Design with Julian Roberts and J.R. Campbell
Geared for people who already have many of the subtraction cutting concepts down and want to see the pros in action in a live cutting performance. Digital printing concepts are also introduced to demonstrate how this medium can be applied in the sub-cutting process. Participants receive patterns in advance in preparation for the workshop. Workshop II is also open to anyone who participated in the June 11th Workshop I: Elementary Sub-cutting.

Sub-cutting Presentation and Fashion Show
Presentation includes a collaborative JR/JR demonstration presenting the concepts of Subtraction Cutting and the application of engineered digitally printed designs to the subtraction cut garments. The last hour includes a reception and fashion show presenting work by Julian Roberts and J.R. Campbell as well as garments created by the students in the supporting workshops. Refreshments provided.

New Yorkers, save the dates June 11th and 12th: Julian Roberts will be teaming up with JR Campbell from Kent State University for the NY leg of Julian's Subtraction Cutting Tour. Sandra Ericson from the Center for Pattern Design has more details. I'll post here, too, as things firm up. Being in Australia, I missed Julian's 2008 tour so very excited to be here for this! Yes, Julian's website is only open on Wednesdays, which in this age of instant gratification is a nice reminder for us to slow down a bit. Check it out tomorrow.

At the moment the amount of writing is making my fingers and brain bleed, hence the lack of posting. I'd be lying if I said this year, with the exhibition(s), thesis submission, the possible show in December and the rest weren't making me nervous. At times it's terrifying. But enough whine and onto business:

UC Davis is hosting a free (good on them!) symposium: “Designing with Conscience: A Sustainable Fashion Symposium” on Sunday, May 18. The list of confirmed speakers certainly looks promising: Lynda Grose is part of the line-up.

And this from Fashioning an Ethical Industry, a Labour Behind the Label project, which couldn't be timelier: Teaching Resources "that will provide educators on fashion-related courses with a variety of ideas to enable them to teach corporate social and environmental responsibility issues." As I noted then, there was a general desire at the IFFTI08 conference for more knowledge among fashion design and technology educators on issues of sustainability, and this looks like a great start.

Discarded to Divine is an upcycling charity project involving designers and students in San Francisco; an article is here and the website, including images, is here. This will be the project's third year, wish them the best of luck.

Staples have switched all their copy and print centres to recycled paper, a first for a national printing service in the US.

Via the Sustainable Style Foundation (I'm still catching up post-Melbourne), Toggery by Kate D'Arcy - with lots of colour! The website claims the product to be 100% organic cotton and locally made; I'd love to know more about the dyes used.

Via Ecotextile News, polyester uniforms of Japanese telecom firm Oki Electric Industry are to be recycled by Teijin, the same company that's working with Patagonia on the Common Threads garment recycling program.
